It’s springtime, and love is in the air…

…which means more animal babies! When these little guys lose their home due to the increase in trees being cut down, they become misplaced, and need to be cared for. These baby birds, squirrels, opossums, raccoons, etc. come to us for rehabilitation, and we use our wildlife account to pay for their care. This account is funded by our very generous clients who are truly good Samaritans! However, due to the increase in wildlife coming in, we are struggling to fund the care of these babies. We are reaching out to you and anybody you know to donate to our wildlife account.

The wildlife account is not only for wildlife, but can also be for orphan kittens or puppies that are too young or sick to go to the humane societies. A lot of times, some kittens/puppies not only need to be nursed back to health, but they need extensive/expensive surgeries, such as leg amputations or eye removal. Anything you could donate would be a GREAT help—even a quarter goes a long way! Sometimes, all we have to buy is formula for the babies.

If you ever come across a baby bird that has fallen out of a tree (and is not hurt) and the mother is nowhere to be found, nail a basket to a tree up off the ground so no animals can get to it. Place the bird in the basket and wait for the mother to come back to it. It is an old wives tale that if you touch the animal, the mother will not come back to it! It WILL! However, if the mother does not return after 1 (one) day or if you come across another wild animal that needs to be rehabilitated, do NOT attempt to care for it yourself. You need to be certified to rehabilitate wildlife, which our clinic is. So PLEASE call us and we will take in the animal, stabilize it, care for it from there, and send it to the proper facility to be rehabilitated.

HOWEVER…if you do choose to handle the wildlife yourself, be VERY careful. There is always a risk of rabies exposure when handling wildlife!!!

If you are interested in donating to the wildlife account, you can drop any loose bills/change in our wildlife donation bucket if you are coming to the clinic. If you can’t come by, you can donate by calling us and giving us a credit card over the phone, or send a check (payable to ACWC) in the mail to: Wildlife Account, 628 Penniman Rd, Williamsburg, VA 23185. Remember, ANY donation is appreciated! Thank you!
